Nasal baby congestion – symptoms, decoding, and home remedies

nasal baby congestion

Nasal baby congestion is common and usually is not serious. And means their immune system is developing. Congestion is a build-up of extra fluids (mucus) in the nose, deeper down in their chest, or both. When the baby’s nose is congested they will act uncomfortable and will have trouble sleeping and feeding. Nasal congestion in babies can be caused by a cold, the flu, sinus infection, allergies, dry air, or poor air quality. Sometimes the runny nose is caused by teething.

Symptoms of nasal baby congestion include:

– noisy breathing

– runny nose

– snoring

– sneezing

– sniffing

– coughing

– difficulty eating

– wheezing

– grunting

Very often the first sign of congestion is visible mucus and could tell us about what’s going on. So, take a look at it before throwing that snot in the trash.

Decoding:

-Clear and colorless is normal and nothing serious.

-White mucus is a sign of infection.

-Stringy mucus may be a sign of an allergy.

-Yellow and green mucus means your baby is sick and the white blood cells are fighting an infection.

-Red and pink mucus is from an irritated nose, which often caused by too dry air.

-Brown-colored mucus means the baby is breading polluted air.

Nasal congestion can be treated with some simple measures at home to relieve the stuffy baby’s nose.

Home remedies for the stuffy nose:

– Saline spray or drops – put two or three drops in each nostril and then use a nasal aspirator to suck the mucus out. Do this regularly throughout the day and it’s better to do it before a feed.

– Humidifier – a cold-mist one can help moisten the air.

– Keep baby upright – while awake and sleep helps a lot. Can place a pillow under the mattress. Gravity helps mucus drain out of the nose and is helpful to help the baby breathe easier at night.

– Water – should be taken to hydrate the body well. Even if you are breastfeeding or using a formula, it is good to give your baby water. You can buy special baby water and try to give as much as possible without forcing the baby.

– Vitamins – continue giving vitamin D to your baby as usual. You can give also some extra vitamin C to boost the baby’s body. It’s very helpful and good for immune support.

– Feeding – if your baby is on solid try to give more fruits and vegetables.

Eucalyptus oil – two or three drops twice a day would be enough. It’s helping to get the mucus out. You can put the eucalyptus oil drops in a simple candle in the room where the baby is during the day. Do not put it in the baby’s nose! Could put it close to the baby, but not right next to him or her!

Schuessler salts – can use combinations of them depending on your case and mucus color. They are safe for babies and children and they are a natural product that can help you out very successfully.

When you need to see your doctor:

Sometimes nasal congestion can be a symptom of a more serious illness. It’s best to check in with your pediatrician. Look out for a change in color of the mucus, high temperature, or labored breathing. If the congestion persists and doesn’t improve after a few days of natural remedies, then take the baby to your doctor. Also, if the baby shows symptoms like flared nostrils, chest sinking, refusing food, not wetting diapers, high fever, lethargy, severe breathing trouble, grunting, it is necessary to take your baby to the doctor for treatment. Have in mind that a baby’s immune system is fragile and symptoms can escalate quickly.
